Generally, I give a book about 25 pages, maybe 50, to hook me. After that point, I just close it up and move to the next book in my pile. I don’t look back. I have piles everywhere — in the dining room, on my bedside table, in my office. I just can’t live without a good book on the go. Emphasis being on good.
So when you hear of a book that is impossible to put down, that is racing off the shelves and impossible to get at the library, well, you just gotta get your hands on it, right? I’m talking Twilight, by Stephanie Meyers. This bestseller has been reviewed and labelled as a “phenomena,” and appealing to all demographics.
Remember I said 50 pages at the most? Okay, I’ve given it a good 200 pages now. I keep trying, and trying, and persisting … thinking the good part is just around the corner. Practically every woman I know has read it now and I have yet to hear a bad review. I must be missing something.
So one more night it is. Perhaps tonight the writing will be less dull, the facile characters more complex, the plot more thrilling … really, I’ll keep trying.
Come on Edward, don’t let me down tonight.
